CHEEKY MONKEY TRIVIA

Did you know that Monkey’s can count and the smartest can even do arithmatic and multiplication?
Some monkey’s also mark themselves to better identify who they are by smearing food or dirt on their tails – just like how humans wear name tags.
Research has shown that the louder the noise some monkey’s make, the lower sperm count it has. Sound familiar? 😉

MAD MONKEY COOGEE BEACH
Mad Monkey Coogee Beach is your dream hostel in Sydney to explore the best free things to do in Sydney. We’re located right on the waterfront so just a stone’s throw away from the sand, surf and swimming in Coogee, as well as tons of great bars and restaurants including FNKY MNKY located on the first floor of the hostel.

Sydney Harbour is one of the most stunningly beautiful harbours in the world and what better way to enjoy it than by hanging out on a boat! There’s lots of choice when it comes to a day on the harbour so we’ve selected a few of the best options for your boating bucklist. Check them out!

The Island

The Island is Sydney’s floating beach club – a permanent stationary pontoon on the harbour that’s there for those who want to party! Think European Beach Club vibes, glam people and DJ’s bringing in good tunes on the harbour. Water taxi’s leave from Double Bay to pick you up and drop you off. Bookings essential.

Hire Your Own

There are an abundance of options when it comes to hiring a charter boat in Sydney. You can choose from the most incredible luxurious yachts, sailing boats, catamarans or a multitude of smaller more modest boats with both catered and non catered options available.

Most will have a minimum hire period (which you’ll want anyway) and if you’re bringing your own alcohol it will be a requirement to bring food too. There are multiple choices for pick up location scattered around both the North and Southern side of the harbour as well as Circular Quay. We recommend Rose Bay for both easy access to Coogee and avoiding the congestion of the city.

Manly Ferry

Although it’s a popular mode of transport for commuters, the Manly Ferry is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable ways to spend some time on the harbour. Get on early to grab a spot outside on the deck and enjoy the half hour scenic journey and fresh sea air.

Yacht Social Club

The Yacht Social Club is a floating festival that runs every Saturday throughout the summer from early November up to late April 2021. Choose your crew, book your yacht and prepare yourself for an awesome day on the water with festival vibes, party people and good tunes! Be warned they book up early so don’t delay.

Seadeck Sydney

Seadeck Sydney is a gorgeous cruising boat that is available for exclusive hire and also runs popular party events throughout the year. Seadeck is fab for those perfect insta pics and good times! Check out their website to see what’s coming up when you want to go.

Clovelly Beach is a small quiet beach popular with families due to it’s protected natural cove and concrete platforms creating easy access to the water. Despite the manmade structures for water access the small beach has retained it’s a natural beauty and is a lovely spot to relax and swim.

Giles Baths

Giles Baths is a natural rock pool known as the “Bogey hole” located at the base of the northern headland of Coogee Beach. Back in the 19th century it was used exclusively by male bathers and is now a popular swimming spot for tourists and locals alike. To access the baths, walk down from the Coastal path in Dunningham Reserve on the northern end of the beach, near where the Bali Memorial stands.

Gordons Bay

Gordons Bay is located approximately 12-15 minutes walk north of Coogee Beach along the well-loved coastal walkway. Protected by an offshore reef, it is a popular spot for both diving and snorkelling. During the summer it gets busy with young people who swim, snorkel, sunbake and generally hang out on the rocks.

Palm Beach

Sydney’s most northerly beach is a relatively quiet spot and is well known for being the film location for the popular Aussie TV series Home and Away. The beach sits on the peninsula between Pittwater and the Central Coast and is about 50 minutes drive from Sydney CBD.  The up-market area is definitely worth a visit to enjoy unpolluted natural scenery, incredible homes and relaxed coastal vibes

Exploring Sydney in Spring

Spring in Sydney is the best time of year for exploring as the sun comes out, the days start to get longer and the rain stays away.
Check out our suggestions for what to do in Sydney in Spring!
Explore Coogee Beach

Watsons Bay

Watsons Bay is a popular tourist spot located on the southern side of the Sydney Heads. The naturally scenic area has incredible views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney skyline as well as a stunning clifftop walk. You can also discover the Hornby Lighthouse, perched atop of The Gap, a dramatic cliff point with a sheer drop to the surf below.

Wylies Baths

Wylie’s Baths is located just a few hundred metres south of Coogee Beach, tucked away below the magnificent Maroubra to Bondi coastal walkway. The Baths have 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean and overlook the famous Wedding Cake Island.
Due to current health advice on social distancing, please contact the business for the most up to date information regarding opening times and services. (As of May 2020)

Sydney Farmers Markets

Sydney’s spring produces some of the freshest and most bountiful local produce so it’s a great time to visit some of Sydney’s best farmers markets. We recommend the Marrickville Organic Markets held every Sunday, the Carriageworks Farmers Market held every Saturday at Carriageworks in Redfern, and the Bondi Farmers Market on every Saturday in Bondi Beach.

Wendy Whitely Secret Gardens

The Wendy Whitely Secret Gardens are a hidden gem located near Luna Park in Lavender Bay. Wendy’s Secret Garden – which is at the foothill of her private home in Lavender Bay was designed by Wendy Whitely following the loss of her husband Australian artist Brett Whitely. The gardens are popular for nature lovers and also offer views of the harbour foreshore, Harbour Bridge and the fringes of North Sydney and the CBD.

Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island is the largest of the islands in Sydney Harbour and has a unique history and heritage. In the 19th century the island was used as a prison as well as a large shipyard where Australian and their allies vessels were serviced during WWII.
Much of it’s heritage can still be felt with many of the historical buildings from the convict era still standing. Other buildings have a deserted feel making for a unique experience while on the island. Overnight accommodation is possible via both camping or timber cottages, both with a great outlook over the harbour.
Cockatoo island is also the home of a lot of pop up art and cultural activity throughout the year so it’s worth checking out to see if anything is happening when you’re visiting. In summertime there are often pop up bars on the waterfront which can have a great vibe for something different.

Hermitage Foreshore Walk

Less than 10km from Coogee is the Hermitage Foreshore Walk; a stunning 1.8km walk along from Rose Bay to Neilson Park. It’s not far, but this relaxing walk was made for lengthy pit stops – picnics, photo ops and great spots for swimming at a number of scenic beaches overlooking the harbour.

Spit to Manly Walk

As the name implies, the walk kicks off at the Spit Bridge and then follows the coastline around Clontarf, Dobroyd Head and Fairlight before arriving at the Manly wharf area. The walk offers spectacular city, harbour and ocean views and a number of aboriginal rock engravings and sites can also be found along the way. Plus you can’t help but marvel at the incredible harbour front mansions and dream big! Be advised that the walk has unpaved sections so we suggest hardy shoes for gravelly and rock surfaces.

Hornby Lighthouse

Around the corner from Watson’s Bay, you’ll find one of Sydney’s cutest lighthouses overlooking the calm waters of Camp Cove on the edge of South Head. The lighthouse has incredible views across Sydney Harbour and the city is easily accessible via walking trails from Watsons Bay.

What’s On in Coogee in September

Every month there’s something new to discover in Coogee ranging from the normal to the absolutely not so normal. This month you’ll find us swimming, running, eating (of course) and exploring our way around town.

Spring runs – Coogee to Malabar

Spring is a great time to get into fitness with the weather perfect for running. If you’re feeling energetic a run from Coogee Beach down to Malabar Beach is an incredibly rewarding experience. However if you don’t have the legs for the whole distance it’s possible to start in Maroubra for the shorter run to Malabar and back. The main path takes you on a continuation of the Coastal Walkway from north Maroubra through the rugged but spectacular Malabar Headland National Park however upon reaching South Maroubra there are a few options including either coastal run (unpaved) or inland run (1km shorter).
The distance covers 5.3km one way or 10.6km return (Coogee – Malabar) or 2.4km one way and 4.8km return (Maroubra to Malabar).

Swimming

With the weather warming up it’s definitely a nice time to get in the water although be prepared to brave the cold water temps! If you want to explore a little further beyond Coogee beach there’s a few lesser known but lovely little spots. Not too far from Coogee is Little Bay Rock Pool – a manmade ring of stones with a bathing area at the southern end of the Little Bay beach. This rock pool was created from beach rocks in the early 1900s to provide safe shark-free bathing for nurses residing nearby at the hospital and is best accessed at low or medium tide. A perfect spot for swimming or snorkelling this little gem is well worth the trip.

Exploring

Visiting Waverley Cemetery might seem like a strange thing to suggest to a tourist but this is not an ordinary cemetery. The heritage listed Waverley Cemetery sits on the cliff front in-between Clovelly and Bronte beaches and has an incredible view across the Sydney eastern beaches coastline. Wander through the Cemetery and inspect the tombs and graves of many significant Australians including the poet Henry Lawson, Jules Archibald, benefactor of the Archibald Prize, nineteenth century poet Henry Kendall and more. The Waverley Cemetery covers 41 acres and includes notable fine artisan work of the stonemasons and richly decorated family tombs. Well worth a look!

Yoga

Stretch and strengthen your way into spring at The Living Room Coogee with small classes in their calm, seaside studio with awesome beach views. Namaste!

Socialising

The team at Meet Up host regular social events across Sydney with something for everyone no matter what your interests. Check out their campfire jam guitar and singing lesson events in Coogee and more!

Eating and drinking

The recent transformation of the Coogee Bay Hotel is now complete with the introduction of Marrah Bar and Restaurant – a gorgeous seafront space within the Coogee Bay Hotel! We recommend checking it out for a delicious Mediterranean inspired meal or just a tipple!

And if it’s variety you’re after, Sydney absolutely delivers with a huge array of global cuisines and unique fusions on offer.

Sydney’s Best Cheap Eats!

………………………………………..

Spice Alley

We totally love a bit of Spice Alley action – a little gem of street food action situated a short walk from Central station. Spice Alley is a little laneway filled with buzzing restaurants and takeaway food vendors with open air seating filling the space. It’s a great vibe with BYO drinks available and best of all the food is delicious, varied and cheap! Take your pic of the modern asian food vendors and restaurants that fill the space and you’ll be sure to leave satisfied.

Mamak

Mamak is a Sydney CBD favourite which in normal times has a line running down the street! The main drawcard is the savoury Malaysian roti served with an array of Malaysian street food dishes although the sweet alternative is also popular. Mamak is definitely delicious, won’t hurt the wallet and well worth the (possible) wait!

Spice I Am

A local Sydney institution Spice I am has been delighting customers for many years with it’s traditional Thai fare. The name gives you a hint that not all the dishes are for the faint hearted – some of them do pack a punch. But no complaints from us as the prices are just as genuine as the food!

Xcel Roll

Xcel Roll is a well loved Coogee local hole in the wall serving super tasty takeaway Vietnamese-style Bahn-Mi and rice paper rolls with a western twist. We totally rate the BBQ Pork roll with chilli mmmm. It’s a great option if you’re looking to grab a delicious takeaway bite (minus the price tag).

Fnky Mnky

For the most conveniently cheap deals you can’t miss the short walk downstairs to Fnky Mnky to enjoy Coogee’s best burgers washed down with a refreshing ale. Enjoy some food on our beachfront balcony, have a few games on our pool table with your mates, and make the most of the cheap prices!

Chinese Noodle Restaurant

There’s a little corner of Chinese restaurants on Thomas Street which are well renowned for being cheap and delicious. Everyone has their own favourite but ours is the Chinese Noodle Restaurant – which oozes authenticity and an extremely low key local vibe and traditional chinese fare. Don’t miss the dumplings and their signature hand pulled noodles.

Hot Star Fried Chicken

This Taiwan fried chicken establishment originated from a night market in Taipei and has exploded with popularity mainly due to its mainstay marinated whole friend chicken breast. The chicken is battered with herbs and spices, fried and wrapped in a paper bag so you can snack till your heart is content. We agree that it’s totally addictive especially with the delicious seasonings including chilli, curry, plum and seaweed.

The Shakespeare Hotel

The Shakespeare Hotel is affectionately known as ‘The Shakey’ amongst locals and has long attracted a young fun loving crowd to their Surry Hills pub. The meals have been a bargain for years and while their $10 meals are no longer on offer it’s hard to complain about their prices or tasty hearty pub grub.

We aren’t your typical party hostel — we want to show you an epic time by immersing you in the local culture and connecting you to the communities you’re exploring. Our socially responsible hostel has projects in Asia that directly supports the locals — building water wells, creating education funds, providing fair employment for our team, and so on — which we’ve found is the best way to effect change. Your stay with us contributes to these efforts.

Our story begins with three backpackers — Steve, Tom, and Alex — who came to Cambodia in 2010. They quickly fell in love with the country and its people, however, the good times they were having in Phnom Penh were contrasted by the poverty that they came face-to-face with each day. Wanting to do something to give back, they had the idea to create substantial, sustainable, and positive change in the country to help other travelers experience its wonder. People thought they were mad, dubbing them the “Mad Monkeys”.

And thus, Mad Monkey was born and has quickly expanded since. Starting in 2011 as a single hostel in Phnom Penh, travelers were drawn to the vibrant atmosphere and social responsibility at the core of the company. Today, Mad Monkey is one of the largest hostel companies in Asia, serving over 350,000 customers per year in Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, and Laos. We continue to rapidly grow as more hostels, property owners, and partners adopt Mad Monkey’s way of delivering a truly amazing customer experience with a social purpose.
