Monkey Cave Espresso

This tiny little spot is simple, but hits the spot. Come here for a strong and tasty coffee — many will argue that Monkey Cave Espresso serves the best coffee in town. Located just a few minutes walking distance from Monkey Forest, this is the perfect place to get your morning pick-me-up, munch on some superb food (it’s a small food menu with a few breakfast and sandwich options) and people monkey watch while relaxing in their open-air seating area.

Clear Cafe

Upon entering Clear Cafe, I was greeted by a posh, airy atmosphere that was surely out of my backpacker budget. I backtracked a bit, back through the intricately-carved swivel door to check out the menu and was delighted to find that prices weren’t just reasonable, but cheaper than many places I had previously dined at. Clear Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and some exquisite looking desserts as well.

Be sure to try one of their famous smoothies, as all ingredients are fresh and locally sourced (strawberries from the fields of Bedugul, mangos from in Singaraja, seaweed bought fresh every day at 5 a.m. off the docks of Kedonganan). Their modern menu has a mix of western, Indonesian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Thai and Indian cuisine to choose from, with plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and nut-free options and alternatives. Enjoy your meal next to the koi pond while listening to the fountains and soft jazz music.

Café du Monyet

If you’re looking for a taste of France while in Ubud, Café du Monyet has your back. This impossibly quaint cafe has all the charm and finesse to temporarily transport you to Europe. Café du Monyet still has a touch of Ubud, however, with its rice paddy views. The food options are plentiful with mostly western options (sandwiches, salads, and other various mains — the Sleezy Cheezy burger is to die for) with a couple Indonesian dishes. As a bonus, all of their vegetables, fruits, meats, and poultry come from organic local farmers.

Watercress Cafe

This trendy spot tends to be busy, so reserve a table in advance (especially if you decide to come here for dinner). Watercress takes pride in their food, usually locally sourced ingredients to be as sustainable as possible. Their seafood is delivered daily from the Canggu coast, the chicken is organic and sourced from Java, and the meat is imported from Australia and New Zealand.  Their restaurant spans two floors, with vaulted ceilings and an open air concept right on Monkey Forest Road. The decor is simplistic, with a dash of that hipster feel we all love, in the form of brick walls and unique light fixtures. Come for the live music in the evenings, every Friday and Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., while indulging in a carefully crafted meal and a specialty cocktail.

Yellow Flower Cafe

This organic food cafe is situated next to Intuitive Flow yoga studio. This open air spot has views of the famous Campuhan Ridge and allows a constant breeze to cool you off while you eat. Yellow Flower supports local organic farmers and also uses ingredients from their own garden. Their main goal is to provide healthy food, so they only use coconut oil to cook with, they serve rice that’s organically grown in fertile volcanic soil in Bali, they don’t use any synthetic flavor enhancers or cook with aluminum cookware, and they only use locally grown village palm nectar, as large palm plantations are big contributors to the destruction of Indonesia’s rainforests.

Sample some wild luwak coffee or try the traditional Balinese drinks, which often use turmeric as the main ingredient and have various benefits including being an anti-inflammatory and helping with digestion. Their menu includes plenty of breakfast options (the F.A.T., which is rustic bread topped with feta, avocado and caramelized tomatoes, was superb!), salads, and Asian fusion mains.

Zest is Ubud in a nutshell: beautiful, healthy, relaxing, and fresh. All ingredients are locally sourced from organic farmers, local artisans, and even some of the staff. So much love is put into every dish, from the way it’s cooked to the beautiful and colorful presentation. Tucked away on a quiet road above the jungles of Ubud, Zest also offers killer views and a spacious set up with plenty of cozy couches to lounge on and outdoor seating amongst lotus ponds, luscious greenery, and trickling fountains.
