We aren’t your typical party hostel — we want to show you an epic time by immersing you in the local culture and connecting you to the communities you’re exploring. Our socially responsible hostel has projects in Asia that directly supports the locals — building water wells, creating education funds, providing fair employment for our team, and so on — which we’ve found is the best way to effect change. Your stay with us contributes to these efforts.
Our story begins with three backpackers — Steve, Tom, and Alex — who came to Cambodia in 2010. They quickly fell in love with the country and its people, however, the good times they were having in Phnom Penh were contrasted by the poverty that they came face-to-face with each day. Wanting to do something to give back, they had the idea to create substantial, sustainable, and positive change in the country to help other travelers experience its wonder. People thought they were mad, dubbing them the “Mad Monkeys”.
And thus, Mad Monkey was born and has quickly expanded since. Starting in 2011 as a single hostel in Phnom Penh, travelers were drawn to the vibrant atmosphere and social responsibility at the core of the company. Today, Mad Monkey is one of the largest hostel companies in Asia, serving over 350,000 customers per year in Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, and Laos. We continue to rapidly grow as more hostels, property owners, and partners adopt Mad Monkey’s way of delivering a truly amazing customer experience with a social purpose.

I stayed here during the low season and thoroughly appreciated it. Even though it was a little further out of town, I liked the fact that I felt like I already had everything I needed when I arrived. The staff was very... friendly, especially the General Manager, Kurt, who was very hands-on in looking after us and the rest of the guests, and he is doing such an amazing job at the hostel, he made sure that our stay was very worthwhile, so kudos to him!They offered wonderful food, my favorite being the mango bacon pizza, there were local convenience stores and pharmacies, so it was still convenient, the room was spotless, and they were playing cool, relaxing tropical beats, what a mood!The location was still a win-win situation for me because I had the opportunity to wake up to a clear and fine beach and view such a breathtaking and amazing sunset, so I hope the location does not deter anyone from staying here because it is well worth it.My experience was wonderful from the moment I came and departed. The daily activities they have are definitely to look forward to and I appreciated it so much that they are helping out the nearby local school to provide better facilities and education for the children. We stayed here with a rather large group (17 people). Even though we arrived in the middle of the night after a very long trip, the staff immediately made sure to make us feel welcome and comfortable. During our stay... the staff were very interactive and friendly. Every night they organized social activities and they even made a special Dutch menu for us and looked up Dutch games to play with us. The staff's dedication to entertain and accommodate their guests is unmatched. The rooms are quite hot but they have installed fans to deal with the heat, which works quite well. Furthermore, even though the hostel is on quite a remote location, El Nido is easily accessible by very friendly tuktuk drivers. I would even say its remote location adds to the experience. The view over the sea with the islands is stunning and you can immediately go for a swim or just relax at the beach with a cold drink. Would definitely recommend.read more

Hands down the most enjoyable hostel I've been to! The staff were very accommodating and welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay pleasant. The food was great, chef Clifford knows how to put together a great... menu! It was also evident the staff was passionate about helping out the local community, which I appreciate a lot. Whether you want to go for a swim, relax on the beach, get drunk like only a European can and sing some awful karaoke, or talk about the serious things in life, this hostel is the place to be! We stayed here with 17 people in July 2024 and they were able to accommodate us perfectly. The food they serve is amazing, they even made a special Dutch menu with some Dutch classics to make us feel right at home. One... of our travel companions has a severe gluten allergy and they took all the necessary precautions and even prepared a special menu so that she could eat normally, much appreciated! We didn’t find that anywhere else in the Philippines.The view from the hostel is amazing - a morning dive in the ocean after waking up on the side of the beach is indescribably beautiful. Every night, there were social activities planned by the Mad Monkey crew, who were very much interacting with all the guests. Furthermore, the crew organised some awesome day tours for reasonable prices.If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in El Nido, I can only recommend Mad Monkey.read more
